Unlucky number 13 brings $1,000,000 Lotto win

2 min read

Fear of the number 13 is so pervasive that it has its own phobia: triskaidekaphobia. But two Victorian families defied superstition and were rewarded with $1,000,000 in last week's Wednsday Lotto, after the unlucky number turned up in the winning combination.

The first winners, a retirement-age couple from Pearcedale, said the win was simply "spooky". The husband said he chose his Wednesday Lotto numbers years ago, and that the number 13 wasn't "particularly meaningful... unlucky for some, lucky for others".

The win was described as nothing short of "life-changing", allowing the couple to buy a home, give their sons a fresh start, and visit their sponsored children in Cambodia. Retirement is also on the cards for the 62-year-old husband, who had expected to work into his seventies.

The second winners, a young family from Melbourne's northern suburbs, said they would use their prize money to "enjoy the simple things" and fulfill the Australian dream - owning their home outright. The husband said that after paying off their mortgage, the family planned to "buy a 4WD and campervan and do some travel around Australia".

The win would also help secure the family's future through real estate investments.

Both winning entries - a System 7 ticket and Standard 6-game ticket - were purchased online. There were two other Division 1 prize winners in last Wednesday's draw, one from New South Wales and the other from Western Australia.

Monday and Wednesday Lotto both offer punters a guaranteed $1,000,000 prize in Division 1 for up to 4 winners - why not try your hand next week? Official Wednesday Lotto tickets are available now.
